Whether you’re a native of the area or just passing through, Allentown is a city with a wide variety of activities to offer.  If you enjoy spending time outdoors, here are a number of places to visit when you’re in the area.

Visit The Rose Gardens

Located at 3000 Parkway Blvd, the rose gardens offer a breathtaking sight regardless of the time of year.  During the springtime when the flowers are just beginning to bloom, it is easy to spend an entire morning—or even an entire day—walking through the gardens enjoying the beauty.

A popular place for wedding shoots, high school senior pictures, and more- the gardens offer a setting unlike anything else in the area for picturesque shots.  Make sure you pack some sunscreen and a picnic lunch, and make plans to spend the day wandering from area to area of the gardens.

Check Out The Soldiers And Sailors Monument

If you are interested in history, you will enjoy visiting this monument to the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War.  Although parking close may be a little bit challenging, it’s well worth the walk to park a few blocks out and walk in.  The parking meters aren’t too expensive, and you can take the opportunity to learn a bit of history.

Take Some Time at the Hatchery

The Allentown Fish Hatchery is a great place to take your family for a fun and educational outing.  The hatchery uses huge outdoor tanks to house fish, and you can purchase fish food to feed them.  The kids will love watching the fish go after the food.

The hatchery offers more than just a chance to feed some fish, however.  It is set up in such a manner as to engage visitors with educational signs containing information on the types of fish involved, caring for the environment, and so on.  This is a great place to take children in order to teach them about taking care of the environment so the environment may provide us with food.

The hatchery has bicycle and hiking paths and you can spend a morning or an afternoon getting some exercise in the fresh air.  It’s a great place to have a picnic, play some outdoor games, and help the kids learn about the world in which we live. Another bonus of visiting the hatchery: it’s free!

Take In A Ballgame

No list of great outdoor activities in Allentown would be complete without mentioning Coca-Cola Park.  Home to the Iron Pigs, the park is a great place to take the family for an afternoon or evening of baseball.  The park is known as one of the best minor league parks in the country, and the food has a reputation for being delicious.  Take the kids to a game and build some memories!

Allentown is a great place to live and a thrilling place for a visit.  Whether you’re a year-round resident or simply visiting on vacation, if you want something to do, simply take the family to any of these outdoor attractions for a fun, educational, and affordable day.
